If you’re looking to take the fantastic journey of VR with the Oculus Quest or Quest 2 and wondering if either requires a console, then you’re in the right place!
The short answer is that both the Oculus Quest and its successor the Oculus Quest 2 are standalone “all-in-one” devices that don’t need a console, PC or any other device to run.
Let’s talk a little more about what I mean here.
The Oculus Quest/Quest 2 as a Standalone Device
That title is exactly the explanation you’re looking for. The Quest/Quest 2 headsets work completely on their own. You don’t even need a TV! I can practically hear your wallet sighing in relief.
So, how does it work if there’s no other console or a TV? Simple!
Once you make sure that your VR headset is charged, you strap on the headset and turn it on – you can also turn it on and then put it on. Wild!
That’s pretty much it. Check the batteries on your controllers too, and you’re all set.
Once turned on and strapped on your head, you will see the visual output directly from within the headset. Since VR displays are actually really small, special lenses are placed in front of them to give you the immersive, large-screen, and “being there” experience.
Everything you would expect from a console is right there: the main menu, the settings, the Oculus Store, and even the wallpaper (custom home environment)! I think you’ll find the user interface rather smooth and easy to navigate through!
This type of setup helps to deliver an excellent wireless VR experience. There are no cables involved unless you plan on using your headset while you charge it.
Oculus Quest/Quest 2: The Basics
Once you’ve got your VR headset and controllers all nice and charged up, you simply navigate to what you want to do.
The main difference of the Quest VR headsets, when compared to regular consoles, such as Playstation or XBox, is that you will feel as if you are actually within this new and exciting world.
You can move your head and hands (or feet) and the virtual world will interact with you (similar to what you experience in the physical world). To grasp the actual feeling of being inside virtual reality, you really have to try it out yourself. I am sure you will be amazed!
There are some pre-installed applications and demos when you first launch your headset. The controllers will help you navigate and select options, download games, watch movies, and much more!
Maybe the only real other requirement with your Quest/Quest 2 is space. You’ll need to make sure that you have enough of it to have the VR experience you really deserve, depending on whether you prefer to sit or stand in your new reality.
So that’s me hoping I’ve pushed you one step closer in the right direction, which is the way of virtual reality! And Oculus Quest 2, without any doubt, is currently the best and most accessible device to bring this new reality to you!
Note! If you’ve heard about people hooking up their Quest headsets to a PC, then that’s a handy little feature called Oculus Link. It’s completely an optional experience, but if you’re wondering now whether you’ll need a PC, I’ve covered everything you need to know in this article.
Long story short though, you won’t need a PC, but it does unlock some new and exciting opportunities for you in the virtual space!
Oculus Quest 2 is still the king of consumer VR! Don't miss out and enter the world of VR experiences, unlike anything you have ever seen!
