How Many Games Can Each Quest Hold?

There is little doubt about the fact that the Oculus Quest 2 is one of the best VR headsets around today.

Currently branded and sold under the name Meta Quest 2 (owing to its acquisition by Meta Technologies), this VR headset is a standalone device. In other words, it does not require you to be connected to your phone, PC, or any other external device.

This means that it has its own storage drive where you can download and install VR games. However, one question that is frequently asked by gamers is – how much space is necessary on the VR headset? To be fair, it’s an important question because you do need sufficient space to hold all of your games, after all!

That’s why we have addressed it in this brief guide. So, if you are curious about it, then jump right in!

Oculus Quest 2 Tech Specs

Before we dive into the main discussion, let us give you a quick recap of the features and specifications of this VR headset. It comes with a RAM of 6 GB, which gives enough memory to run most VR games and videos. Likewise, this headset uses the incredibly fast Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor to reduce lags and stutters.

In addition, it uses a fast-switching LCD display with a resolution of 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye. The display panel supports three different refresh rates of 60, 72, and 90 Hz. Apart from that, it features 3D positional audio to provide maximum immersion. You also have the option to use headphones, thanks to the 3.5-mm audio jack.

As for the storage capacity, you get two variants with this headset – 128 GB and 256 GB. This is our primary area of concern in this article, and we have discussed it in greater detail in the subsequent sections.

How Big Are Oculus Quest 2 Games?

If you wish to purchase the best VR headset for your gaming needs, you need to consider the size of the games as well. In this regard, the game sizes on the Oculus Quest 2 vary considerably. There are Quest games that are as small as 0.2 GB, while some of the largest games exceed 40 GB in size.

For instance, the game Angry Birds VR: Isle Of Pigs has an install size of 230 MB. In contrast, the Medal Of Honor VR game occupies around 42 GB of storage space. However, most games on the Quest are less than 10 GB in size. So, on average, each game can be considered to have a size of 1 to 2 GB.

Besides, it’s not just the games you need to worry about, for the device is used to store other apps and videos too. And since it is essentially a virtual desktop, there is some space occupied by the operating system.

On that note, the OS and the apps have sizes similar to those observed in regular smartphones. The sizes of VR videos are quite large, though, and from our testing, even the short videos we had took up considerable space.

Keeping that in mind, another way of framing the primary question of this article is – how many games can each variant of the Oculus Quest 2 hold? We have sought to answer this question in the next sections, so keep reading.

Is 64 GB Enough For The Oculus Quest 2?

As we have mentioned above, the Quest 2 is available in two storage capacities – 128 GB and 256 GB, which means that a 64 GB variant does not exist today. This size variant was available only for the original Oculus Quest headset, which is no longer in production.

That said, the 64 GB base model of the original Quest had enough space to hold some of the most popular games, such as Beat Saber, Rec Room, and Echo VR.

Is 128 GB Enough For The Oculus Quest 2?

The 128 GB variant is the base model for the Quest 2. If you are to assume the average size of a Quest game to be around 2 GB, then you can easily store more than ten games on the machine. This is in addition to the operating system, as well as any apps and video content.

You can store most of the popular VR games on the headset, which will be sufficient for most users. However, if you want to play some of the heavier VR games, such as Resident Evil 4, or Medal Of Honor, you might run out of space quickly. In that situation, you can easily delete games and videos that you do not need anymore to free up some storage.

With that being said, the 128 GB variant is not exactly future-proof since new VR games are steadily increasing in size. But if you play only a few games at a time, and have a limited budget, then the 128 GB variant will suit you just fine.

Is 256 GB Enough For The Oculus Quest 2?

In case you have some extra money to spare, you can get yourself the 256 GB variant. With it, you get abundant space to store even the larger VR titles with ease. Conversely, you can store numerous smaller games and build a library of VR movies and apps. Even after that, you will have a lot of space left over for your future games and videos.

Needless to say, with the 256 GB variant, you will be adequately future-proofed. And unless there is a drastic increase in the size of VR games in coming years, you will not have to worry about running out of storage space.

The trade-off is its higher price, which can be a risky investment for many people. So, you should only get it if you have the funds. Otherwise, you won’t have enough money left to buy any of the games you want from the Oculus Store.

Final Words

At the end of the day, the most suitable size depends on how much you are planning to use the headset.

For average VR gamers, the 128 GB variant is the best pick, in our opinion. That’s because they won’t be keeping a large number of games on the machine at once anyway. On the other hand, you should get the 256 GB variant if you are a power user that plays VR games all the time.

On a side note, you should be wary of the battery life of the headset too. If you play graphics-heavy games, your battery will drain faster than normal. However, if you play casual games that have smaller sizes, you can extend your battery life considerably.
